Jennifer Arnold is a violist, arts consultant, and advocate for equity in classical music, currently based in the Netherlands. Driven by a commitment to expanding the symphonic canon, she works to create meaningful platforms that amplify diverse voices and reshape the future of the field. Jennifer previously served as Director of Artistic Planning and Orchestral Operations for the Richmond Symphony and is currently their Artistic Advisor. She also consults for the Gateways Music Festival and serves as Director of Summer Programs, Career Advisor, and Black Student Union Faculty Advisor at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she is an alumna. She is in her final year as a member of Cohort 5 in the Sphinx LEAD program. Jennifer spent 15 seasons as a section violist with the Oregon Symphony and performs with ensembles like the Gateways Festival Orchestra, Sphinx Symphony, Chineke! Orchestra, and mousai REMIX. A founding member of the Black Orchestral Network, she holds memberships with ASTA, SAA, AFM Local 99, WOCA, and the Urban League. She attended Interlochen Arts Academy for high school, and then continued her studies at the University of Southern California under the tutelage of Ronald Leonard. She has been a member of the New World Symphony in Miami, Florida, and the Charlotte Symphony in North Carolina, and joined the Seattle Symphony in the fall of 2014. Most recently, Joy earned her MBA from Columbia University. In addition to performing music, Joy is passionate about teaching music to kids and has participated in several programs to bring music education to historically excluded communities. Principal clarinet of The Phoenix Symphony; active as a performer and an artist who teaches; passionate and curious about organizational design, culture, and learning; committed to exploring how an orchestral musician and an orchestra navigates the push and pull between a legacy art form and its unfixed future. In short: he believes that ‘music isn’t just sound; it’s sounds, words, and people.’ Alex is fortunate to have garnered honors and awards in his career, most recently being recognized with a 2018 Sphinx Medal of Excellence. In addition to his work with The Phoenix Symphony, he is frequently sought as a collaborator. Recent seasons have finding him contributing his sound in a range of other projects including: as a soloist with the Sphinx Virtuosi at Carnegie Hall; with Lawrence Brownlee (in the world premiere of Tyshawn Sorey’s Cycles of My Being); with the Re-Collective Orchestra (in the 2019 soundtrack recording of Disney’s The Lion King), and as a member of Gateways Festival Orchestra. Alex has been an invited speaker to the annual conferences of both the Association of British Orchestras and the League of American Orchestras where, in 2019 he was a keynote speaker. As a teacher, he is a faculty member for the League of American Orchestras 'Essentials of Orchestra Management Seminar', Juilliard Extension (formerly Juilliard Evening Division), and the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s YOLA National Institute, a year round program for young musicians. His most recent collaboration brings him into a new medium: joining the creative team for From The Top (FTT) the nationally broadcast radio show and platform for young musicians. A graduate of Northwestern University, he received his master's degree in Orchestral Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, an artist's diploma from the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam and a certificate in nonprofit management from Arizona State University's Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation. A founding member of the Black Orchestral Network, Norville has been instrumental in national conversations around equity and representation in classical music, helping to shape policy and community frameworks that uplift Black musicians and reframe the narrative of access in American orchestras. His work with Every Voice with Terrance McKnight at New York Public Radio—recognized as a Webby Award Honoree and winner of two Black Podcasting Awards—bridges historical inquiry with creative storytelling to illuminate how music both reflects and reshapes society. Through his company Focus On Your Art, David supports artists, organizations, and cultural movements in telling stories that educate, inspire, and empower. His podcast, Black Music Seen, celebrates the journeys of Black orchestral musicians whose brilliance and resilience continue to redefine excellence. As an oboist, he has performed with the Gateways Music Festival Orchestra and served as artist-in-residence at Interlochen Public Radio with the Sound Garden Quintet. Rooted in his upbringing as a Black, Guyanese-American artist, Norville’s work is informed by the rhythms of church, the discipline of conservatory training, and the conviction that creativity is infrastructure—an engine for social transformation and human connection. A graduate of the New England Conservatory and Interlochen Arts Academy, David’s leadership extends beyond performance to the broader ecosystems of cultural equity and public imagination. His mission is to use sound and story as tools for socioeconomic empowerment, collective healing, and truth-telling. His work includes performance, education, administration, and thought leadership. He is an active speaker, writer, and consultant for diversity and inclusion initiatives in classical music, regularly presenting at conferences and contributing to musical publications. Weston enjoys an exciting career that includes orchestral, chamber, and solo performances. He has performed with several of the world's leading orchestras and music festivals and has been a featured soloist throughout the United States, Europe, South Africa, and Asia. He has been recognized as “an excellent trombonist” with a “sense of style and phrasing [that] takes a backseat to no one." A dedicated and tireless teacher, Sprott holds faculty positions at The Juilliard School and Bard College. He regularly serves on the faculties of numerous summer programs and appears frequently as a guest teacher at conservatories, universities, and other leading programs such as the New World Symphony and The Orchestra Now. He is an active speaker, writer, and consultant for diversity and inclusion efforts in classical music. Ms. Nelson served as acting principal viola of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, and is presently a member of the Cleveland Orchestra. She has appeared as soloist with orchestras including the Ohio Chamber Orchestra and the San Antonio Symphony. One of her big passions is chamber music, which she taught for several years at ENCORE School for Strings. She also taught viola at the Cleveland School of the Arts Lower Campus, and currently at the High School as part of the Cleveland Orchestra Music Mentors program. Ms. Nelson recorded “Quincy Porter Viola Works,” her first album which was released in 2009 and was nominated in four Grammy categories, winning “Best Engineered Album, Classical”. She is the Co-Founder of the Re-Collective Orchestra, an all-black orchestra dedicated to raising the visibility and profile of black musicians and to present culturally relevant work to engage diverse audiences. Ms. Matthews is the former Director of Artist Development for the Sphinx Organization, cultivating the careers of some of the nation's top Black and Latino artists through professional development initiatives, including the Sphinx Competition, Sphinx Soloist Program and the Sphinx Virtuosi tour. She has served as the Assistant Dean and violin faculty with the Sphinx Performance Academy and served as Artist in Residence at the National Academy of Performing Arts in Trinidad and Tobago. In 2022, Ms. Matthews became the first Black Concertmaster of the Academy Awards Orchestra, under the musical direction of Adam Blackstone. She made history again that year with the Re-Collective Orchestra as the first all-Black orchestra to perform at the Hollywood Bowl for their Juneteenth celebration, live broadcast by CNN. Ms. Matthews has written, recorded and contributed to various music, television and film soundtracks. As the Owner and Executive Creative Director of StringCandy, she has engaged musicians throughout the US, Europe, the Middle East and Australia for various tours, music festivals, and for live and recorded television shows. Most recently, Ms. Matthews contracted and recorded for Beyoncé’s “Be Alive” performance at the 2022 Academy Awards and for Adele’s Emmy-nominated “One Night Only” television special in Los Angeles. Stemming from personal experience, her research explores how the mechanisms of white supremacy operate in classical music performance, examining how racial and aesthetic hierarchies position Black bodies as aberrant in these spaces. Specifically, Lexi's' research centers on the resilience and resistance that Black muisicians display in the face of racism in classical music pedagogy and performance.. As a filmmaker, Lexi produced a multi-modal dissertation, consisting of a written portion and an accompanying documentary that attends to the aural and performative aspects of her research. Lexi has worked on the Decolonial Pedagogy Committee at Duke, and collaborated with professors to create a Black feminist theories syllabus for incoming Cultural Anthropology graduate students. As one of the chairs of the Association of Black Anthropologist’s Student Interest Group (SIG), Lexi is passionate about working against gate keeping practices that discourage Black and other POC students from feeling welcomed and valued. As a member of the Black Orchestral Network and a former violist, Lexi is excited about working to develop a mentorship initiative for burgeoning and junior Black musicians.
