Black Music Seen: Conversations in New York

Join the Black Orchestral Network for a special live taping of Black Music Seen, featuring founding members Weston Sprott and Shea Scruggs with special guest, internationally acclaimed tenor Lawrence Brownlee.

In the first half of the afternoon, Shea leads an intimate conversation with Weston about his journey as an artist and leader, the origin story of the Black Orchestral Network, highlights from BON’s 2025 work, and the movement that continues to grow around “Dear American Orchestras.”

After a short break, the conversation widens to include Lawrence Brownlee, opening a candid dialogue about life in opera and classical music as a Black artist—where we’ve come from, what’s changing, and the work still ahead.

Recorded in front of a live audience, this free and open-to-the-public event captures Black musicians in conversation about power, possibility, and the future of our field.

Location: Opera America 330 7th Ave 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001, United States

Date: Wednesday, December 17 from 2pm - 4pm (short break around 3pm)

The Black Orchestral Network's podcast Black Music Seen: Conversations in New York is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
